Guest Blogger – Stephanie Nickel

One of the reasons I wanted to blog was to encourage other writers. So on that note, I’ve invited Stephanie Nickel to be a guest blogger. We met at Write Canada 2011. Her charming personality and warm smile drew me in like a magnet.

Welcome Stephanie and thank you for sharing all of your “eclectic” interests.

Scattered? I Prefer Eclectically Interested

by Stephanie Nickel

I want to thank Tracy for the privilege of guest blogging today. Tracy and I met at the 2011 Write! Canada conference and have been corresponding ever since.

I have many interests, as you can see from my brief bio below. And while my numerous pursuits aren’t for everyone, they work for me – most of the time.

I’ve been told we should pick one or two things to do in life and set aside the others. I just can’t see that happening. While I make lengthy To Do lists, my greatest desire is to fulfill the divine To Do list God has prepared for me.

The Lord caused my path to intersect with Karen Burkett’s not once but twice. For the second time round, I do freelance writing and editing for her online company ( How we connected – and then reconnected – is a story in itself. Suffice it to say the first time was because I subscribed to an online newsletter for Christian writers and the second was because my name was right after one of her client’s in her drop down address menu.

I’ve worked with clients from all around the world. It’s amazing really. I just love the Cyber Age.

And speaking of that, I love to chat, tweet, and circle up on the various social networks. I admit many days I spend too much time doing so. However, I have met – and stay in touch with – some of the most incredible people in cyberspace.

And that brings me to the long list of blogs I want to follow, not to mention the many books and magazines that are calling my name. This is one area in which I must narrow my focus. With my many interests, there is no shortage of reading material. However, I have to accept the fact I’ll never read everything I want to.

My career as a personal trainer was another thing that fell into my lap. I joined the gym as my daughter’s workout partner and less than a month later, I became a trainer. Although I no longer work at the gym, I do take some private clients and intend to maintain my certification, at least for the time being. It also keeps me motivated to exercise regularly and eat better, not that I always follow through.

While I was training at the gym, one of the young women mentioned she would like to have a midwife. I told her I’d considered midwifery, and she asked if I could complete the course in seven months. Of course the answer was no, but it did get me thinking about following up on something I’d learned about only a short time earlier – becoming a labour doula. I signed up for CAPPA Canada’s online course and got to work.

While I believe there are many advantages to my eclectic interests, I do know I have to be careful to balance my many pursuits. As a Christian, my highest priority must be to honour and glorify God in all I do. As a wife and mother, I believe blessing my family comes next on the list. Extended family and friends… Clients… Acquaintances… As you can see, it’s all about relationships for me. As I flit from one place to the next, from one interest to the next, it is my desire to build up and encourage those whose paths cross mine.

So, while I may seem scattered, I would rather refer to myself as eclectically interested, eclectically interested with a purpose.

Bless you!

Blogger, freelance writer and editor, volunteer with The Word Guild and Write! Canada, certified personal trainer, labour doula-in-training… That pretty much sums up Steph’s current endeavours. 5. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Appreciate it!
